About Quail Run Farm

Quail Run Farm is a working cattle farm located in the Alexandria Valley near Ohatchee, Alabama. This farm is owned and operated by Dick , Sherron, and Brad Pritchett. It is part of the McCullars Plantation, originally owned by the McCullars family. It has been passed down from generation to generation. Brad is the fourth generation McCullars relative to own this plantation. It was originally over a thousand acres but now is approximately 600 acres. William McCullars purchased the property from the Crook family that acquired the property from the Creek Indians.

The famous Battle of 1813 was fought on this and surrounding property and Andrew Jackson adopted a Creek Indian boy named Lycoya that was found in his mother’s arms after she was shot dead by Andrew Jackson’s men. General Jackson gathered the boy and carried him to modern day Ohatchee and nursed him back to health. He then carried Lycoya to The Hermitage near Nashville, Tennessee and raised him as his adopted son. Lycoya was accepted to the United States Military Academy but died at the age of sixteen before entering the academy. General Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachel grieved over his son’s death until they died.

The original home place still stands in its glory and is owned by Mrs. T. T. McCullars, Sherron’s aunt. The original plantation house was four rooms built with wooden pegs and had two rooms upstairs for the slaves to live. When William McCullars purchased the property, he built an additional ten rooms and a wrap around porch. He tore down the slave quarters because he didn’t believe in slavery. The home is kept in wonderful condition by the McCullars family and is one of the most breathtaking homes in Calhoun County. I have posted a picture of the home on this web –site and please take time to view this beautiful home. Sherron and I live across the road about one-eight of a mile away. Sherron and I love horses and you will also see our home with a statue of a horse surrounded by an antique fence removed from the old Crook family cemetery. The fence is over one hundred years old and makes he horse look outstanding. Monuments featuring history of the Battle of 1813 and Lycoya are featured in a near by park across the road.

Our farm also features a Dutch-style barn that was built by my father-in-law H L McCullars in the 1950’s..It is where I spend most of my time and is my home away from home. I feel totally at peace and love every minute in and around the facility. I write many of my poems from the balcony over looking Cedar Creek which runs directly behind the barn. I hope you buy one or more of my book of stories and poems. The funds generated by your purchase will help both men and women regain their lives by rehabbing in the facilities of BrokenStone Ministries.
